The toy line 'Masters of the Universe "was created by Mattel in 1981 and first released in stores in 1982 as a 5 1/2-inch action figures (as opposed to the 3 3/4 inch size used by Kenner's Star Wars and Hasbro's GI Joe: A Real American Hero lines). The two main characters, He-Man ( "the most powerful man in the universe") and his nemesis Skeletor ( "evil lord of destruction") were the first to be released in action figure form, along with other key characters from the series: Man -at-Arms ( "heroic weapon master"), Beast Man ( "Skeletor's savage travant") and Battle Cat ( "He-Man's fighting tiger"). Later that year the first wave of action figures in 1982 would Teela, Mer-Man, Stratos and Zodiac. In addition to the first wave of the figures were Battle Ram and Wind Raider vehicles, and the playground appliance Castle produced GraySkullDesign. These first figures as Castle Grayskull were primarily designed by Mark Taylor, although the final production of the original He-Man action figure was completed by Tony Guerrero.
