The Transformers is a line of toys produced by the American toy company Hasbro and Japanese company Takara (now known as Takara Tomy) The Transformers toyline was created from toy molds mostly produced by Japanese company Takara in the toylines Diaclone and Microman. Other toy molds from other companies such as Bandai were used as well.

In 1984, Hasbro bought the distribution rights to the molds and rebranded them as the Transformers for distribution in North America. The Transformers toyline is typically divided into two main factions: the heroic Autobots and their opponents, the evil Decepticons (traditionally known in Japan as the Cybertrons and Destrons).

  • Transformers: Energon

All Transformers: Energon figures from Hasbro

A small number of Transformers: Energon Built to Rule sets had a limited, test market release, and the structure of the Trans-Skeleton was changed for the Energon characters, to a much more solid skeleton with larger, blockier limbs. This led to much more solid, stable and sturdy-looking robot modes, but the entire line performed poorly, so it was dropped in its entirety in 2004.

Transformers: Robots in Disguise is an anime series which has an associated toy line released in 2001 by Hasbro. The anime and toy line were originally released in Japan in 2000 by Takara as Transformers: Car Robots. Originally imported to the West as a "filler" line while Transformers: Armada was in production, Robots in Disguise brought the Autobot and Decepticon factions (and thus, the original concept of robots transforming into vehicles and other objects rather than organic-looking animals) back into the general public after five years of Beast Wars and Beast Machines lines. (Machine Wars, which was exclusive to Kay-Bee Toys branches, was a previous failed attempt at rejuvenating interest in both factions.) While it introduced many new figures, majority of the line consisted of repaints from Generation 1, Generation 2, Beast Wars/Beast Machines and Machine Wars.

The film, and thus the toy line, is based on the original Transformers media franchise. Releases in this toy line ran from May 2009 to early 2010. The 2007 toy line proved to be a retail hit, selling even 18 months after the first film was released. Pictures of the first Revenge of the FAlln toys started to appear in on the internet in late 2008. Hasbro files for a trademark on the name "Revenge of the FAlln" as a toy line in May 2008. The toy line continued on mid-2010 simply as Transformers (also known as Hunt for the Decepticons).

The Transformers movie toys were released in conjunction with the 2007 Transformers film, comics and video games, and expanded on the characters and story in them. They were manufactured and sold by Hasbro worldwide, except in Japan by Takara Tomy. It was expected that the release of a new movie would involve the production and release of associated toys from Hasbro and Takara Tomy. Images surfaced, online, of some toy prototypes, notably Starscream and a new Decepticon who was to be named Blackout, along with packaged samples of movie preview "Protoform" Optimus Prime and Starscream toys. Similarly, fans found preliminary artwork of multiple characters, although it was not known at the time how close these were to the final designs. The designs were significantly different from those of the Generation 1 characters with the same names. Reactions varied widely: some fans objected strongly to the designs, occasionally going so far as to threaten a boycott if the designs were not changed to be more traditional, while others liked them. The issue became a divisive one, as detractors accused supporters of lacking respect for the franchise's history, while supporters accused detractors of being "stuck in the past", and not accepting change. Fans of the franchise have affectionately nicknamed the designs "Bayformers" due to director Michael Bay's influence.
