The company started in 1952 under the name Capitol Wrestling Corporation, which promoted under the banner of the World Wide Wrestling Federation (WWWF) and later the World Wrestling Federation (WWF). In 1982 it was sold to Titan Sports, later renamed WWF World Wrestling Federation Entertainment, before the 2002 World Wrestling Entertainment became known, on 7 April 2011 to simplify the acronym WWE.
